چکیده

A linac-ring collision scheme was considered in recent proposals of electron-gold colliders (eRHIC) and polarized-electron light-ion colliders (EPIC). The advantages of using an energy-recovered linac for the electron beam is that it avoids the limitation of beam-beam tune shift inherent in a storage ring, pertains good beam quality and easy manipulation of polarization. However, the interaction of the ion beam in the storage ring with the electron beam from the linac acts analogously to a transverse impedance, and can induce unstable behavior of the ion beam similar to the strong head-tail instability. In this paper, this beam-beam kink instability with head-tail effect is analysed using the linearized Vlasov equation, and the threshold of transverse mode coupling instability is obtained.

Kink instability suppression with stochastic cooling pickup and kicker

The kink instability is one of the major beam dynamics issues of the linac-ring based electron ion collider. This head-tail type instability arises from the oscillation of the electron beam inside the opposing ion beam. It must be suppressed to achieve the desired luminosity. There are various ways to suppress the instability, such as tuning the chromaticity in the ion ring or by a dedicated fe...

Ion Effects in the Electron Damping Ring of the International Linear Collider*

Ion-induced beam instabilities and tune shifts are critical issues for the electron damping ring of the International Linear Collider (ILC). To avoid conventional ion trapping, a long gap is introduced in the electron beam by omitting a number of successive bunches out of a long train. However, the beam can still suffer from the fast ion instability, driven by ions that last only for a single p...

An Energy Recovery Electron Linac-on-proton Ring Collider

Electron-proton colliders with center of mass energies between 14 GeV and 30 GeV and luminosities at the 10 level have been proposed recently as a means for studying hadronic structure [1]. Electron beam polarization appears to be crucial for the majority of experiments. Two accelerator design scenarios have been examined in detail: colliding rings [2] and recirculating linac-on-ring [3]. Altho...

Fast Ion Instability Simulations for CesrTA

In 2008, it has been proposed to convert the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) into a test accelerator, called CesrTA, for the proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) damping rings. One of the effects to be studied in CesrTA is fast ion instability. An electron beam ionizes residual gas in the vacuum chamber, resulting in positive ions being trapped in the beam’s potential. Fast ion ins...
